What causes back pain?
Back pain can be grouped into 2 categories. Specific and non-specific. Specific back pain has a specific cause for example a disc injury or a fall. Non-specific back pain does not have a specific cause & majority of back pain presentations are non-specific.
There is usually no one single cause of back pain but a multitude of factors for why it occurs. This includes physical factors, social factors and biological factors. Some back pain can be more physical in nature, others can be more biological.
How does back pain happen?
Back pain can happen a million and one different ways. Back pain is complex and not as straight forward as some health professionals make it out to be. There are many factors that can influence one to experience back pain.
We call this the biopsychosocial relationship. These may be physical factors like someone’s occupation or gym exercises as well as social factors like relationship stress or death of a loved one. Biological factors like a family history of arthritis or scoliosis can also influence a persons back pain experience.
How do I know if I have a serious back Injury?
We must clear up a few misconceptions of what a serious back injury is not. It does not always include pulling your back out at work or feeling occasionally stiff & sore back after the gym. There are tell tail signs that a back injury is serious.
These included but are not limited to nerve pain (pins & needles or numbness) down the leg or in the foot, pain especially at night, increased weight loss, being over the age 55, bladder & bowel dysfunction, numbness or loss of sensation in groin area.
It is always recommended to seek a professional opinion preferably a musculoskeletal practitioner such as a chiropractor, physiotherapist or osteopath.
An MRI is ideal for confirming soft tissue injuries i.e. nerve injuries or disc injuries . X-ray imaging is best for determining bony abnormalities such as scoliosis or fracture.
How do I heal my back pain?
Back pain is complex & it takes a tailored & thoughtful approach to make significant improvements. Massage, dry needling and adjustments alone are not enough to heal or fix back pain.
If you’ve undergone surgery or considering surgery for back pain, just know that long term outcomes are not favourable. (1)
There was no difference after a four year follow for chronic back pain sufferers who underwent surgery vs those who took the conservative route. (1)
